Tile Installation · O'Fallon & St. Charles County
Straight lines, flat floors, no hollow spots.
Good tile work is mostly preparation. We get the floor flat, the walls waterproof and the layout planned before the first tile is set.
Tile Installation
Cracked tile is almost never the tile's fault. It cracks because the floor under it flexes, the thinset didn't fully cover the back, or the backer board went in wrong. Showers leak because someone trusted grout to keep water out. The work you can't see once the job is finished is what decides whether tile lasts five years or thirty.
We spend the time up front. Shane checks the floor for flex and flatness, adds support or levels it where needed, and plans the layout so cuts land in the right places instead of leaving a sliver at the doorway. In showers, a waterproof membrane goes behind the tile and over the pan. Grout lines come out straight because the prep was right.
We install tile floors, shower walls and pans, tub surrounds, backsplashes and fireplace surrounds, and we replace tile that has cracked, come loose or been damaged by water. Whether you've picked large porcelain planks or simple subway tile, we'll set it carefully and leave the job clean. Ask Shane anything along the way. He'll explain it in as much detail as you want.
This page covers
- Tile work installation
- Tile work replacement
What's included
Every part of the job, handled.
- 01
Tile floors
Floors checked for flatness and stiffness, then tiled with full thinset coverage so the tile doesn't crack or sound hollow a few years later.
- 02
Showers and tub surrounds
Shower walls, pans and tub surrounds built over a waterproof membrane, with floors sloped to the drain and niches that don't hold water.
- 03
Kitchen backsplashes
Backsplash tile cut cleanly around outlets, windows and cabinets, with the layout centered so the pattern looks deliberate rather than squeezed in.
- 04
Tile repair and replacement
Cracked, loose or hollow tiles removed and replaced, and the cause underneath, usually a flexing floor or missing thinset, corrected first.
- 05
Layout and pattern planning
Layouts planned before setting, so cuts are balanced, grout lines carry between rooms, and large tiles don't end in thin slivers at the walls.
- 06
Grout and sealing
Grout chosen for the location, packed full and sealed where the material calls for it, so it resists stains and stays easy to clean.
Shane from A to Z Improvements did an amazing job on my project. You can really tell he takes pride in his work. His attention to detail stood out from start to finish. Everything was done carefully and came out exactly how I wanted it. On top of that, his prices were super reasonable, especially for the quality of work he delivered. He's also quick to respond and very easy to talk to, which made the whole process smooth and stress-free. And just like his motto says, "from roof to basement and everything in between," he really can handle it all. I'll definitely be having him back for more work in the future. Highly recommend!

FAQ
Tile Installation:
common questions
Still wondering about something? Call or text Shane at (636) 306-0393.
Why does my tile keep cracking?
Usually the problem is underneath. A floor that flexes, a crack in the concrete telegraphing up through the tile, or tile set without full thinset coverage will keep breaking pieces no matter how many get replaced. We find the cause before we fix the tile, so you aren't looking at the same crack again next winter.
Can you replace just a few cracked tiles?
Often, yes, if you have spares from the original job or we can find a match. We remove the damaged pieces carefully without disturbing the tiles around them, fix whatever caused the crack, and regrout to blend. If your tile has been discontinued, Shane will talk through options like a deliberate accent pattern or a larger section repair.
Do you install large-format tile?
Yes. Large tiles, including long wood-look planks, need a flatter floor than small tiles, or the edges won't line up and you'll feel lips underfoot. We check flatness carefully and level the floor where needed, and we back-butter large tiles for full coverage. It takes more prep, but the finished floor looks clean and modern.
How soon can I use a new tile floor or shower?
It depends on the setting materials and the room. Thinset and grout need time to cure before heavy traffic, and a new shower needs longer still before it gets wet. We'll give you a clear answer on when it's safe to walk on the floor and when you can take the first shower, based on the products used.
