Decks & Patios · O'Fallon & St. Charles County
Outdoor space built solid from the footings up.
We build decks and patios that look good on top and are built right underneath, where most decks quietly fail.
Decks & Patios
A deck looks simple: posts, beams, joists and boards. But most deck failures start where you can't see them. A ledger board nailed to the house without flashing rots the rim joist behind it. Footings that aren't deep enough heave in a hard freeze. Joists spaced too far apart sag and bounce. We build every deck with those weak points in mind.
Plenty of decks around O'Fallon, St. Peters and Lake Saint Louis went up with the house in the 1990s and 2000s, and they're showing their age. Shane will inspect yours and tell you whether it can be resurfaced, needs structural repair, or should come down. If the framing is sound, new boards and railings can buy you years. If not, he'll explain why.
We also build ground-level patios and the pieces that connect outdoor living to the yard: steps, landings and clean transitions. Where your city requires a permit for the deck, we handle it. Our standard is simple. You should be able to host a crowd on it this summer, and it should still feel solid when your kids are grown.

What's included
Every part of the job, handled.
- 01
New deck construction
Decks laid out for how you'll actually use them, with footings, beams and joists sized for the span and the load, not just the minimum.
- 02
Ledger and flashing
Ledger boards bolted to the house and flashed correctly, so water doesn't rot the rim joist where the deck meets your home.
- 03
Rebuilds and resurfacing
Old boards and railings replaced on a sound frame, or a failing deck taken down and rebuilt when the structure can no longer be trusted.
- 04
Railings and stairs
Sturdy railings, balusters and stairs built to code, with spacing and heights that keep kids, guests and older visitors safe on every step.
- 05
Patio construction
Ground-level patios graded so rainwater drains away from the house, giving you usable outdoor space where a raised deck isn't needed.
- 06
Permits and inspections
Deck permits and inspections handled wherever your city requires them, which matters for safety today and for a smooth sale later.
Shane from A to Z Improvements did an amazing job on my project. You can really tell he takes pride in his work. His attention to detail stood out from start to finish. Everything was done carefully and came out exactly how I wanted it. On top of that, his prices were super reasonable, especially for the quality of work he delivered. He's also quick to respond and very easy to talk to, which made the whole process smooth and stress-free. And just like his motto says, "from roof to basement and everything in between," he really can handle it all. I'll definitely be having him back for more work in the future. Highly recommend!

FAQ
Decks & Patios:
common questions
Still wondering about something? Call or text Shane at (636) 306-0393.
Can my old deck be resurfaced instead of replaced?
Sometimes. If the posts, beams, joists and ledger are solid and properly attached, new decking and railings can give it a second life. If the frame is rotted or the ledger was never flashed, new boards only hide the problem. Shane will probe the framing from underneath and tell you which situation you're in before you spend anything.
Should I choose wood or composite decking?
Pressure-treated wood costs less up front and takes stain in any color, but it needs regular sealing to survive Missouri sun and humidity. Composite costs more and isn't maintenance-free, but it won't splinter or need restaining. Both need a solid frame underneath. Shane will lay out the tradeoffs so you can choose what fits how you live.
Do I need a permit to build a deck?
Often, yes. Decks attached to the house or raised off the ground usually need one, though the details vary between O'Fallon, St. Charles, Lake Saint Louis and unincorporated parts of the county. We check the requirements for your address and handle the permit and inspections where they apply. If you have an HOA, its approval may be needed too.
When is the best time to build a deck?
Spring through fall is the most common building season, and those months tend to fill up. Footings can't go into frozen ground, so winter builds depend on the weather. Calling in late winter gives time for design, HOA approval and permits before the weather turns. Shane will be straight with you about when he can realistically start.
